2XU Local Legend - Hawaii Ironman Triathlete
When and why did you first encounter 2XU?
When I won the first round of the IRONMAN ‘Kona Inspired’ competition, a friend of mine put me in contact with 2XU who amazingly offered me an official Ambassadorship! I didn't think I’d have a chance in gaining a sponsor - I wasn't a professional athlete and felt humbled by their interest. I think it's a testament to 2XU that they support not only professional athletes but local part time athletes like myself. We all just want to do the best we can and 2XU helps us do that.
What was your first purchase?
2XU Compression Shorts. They have done some miles but hold a sentimental place in my heart!
What was your feedback to the garment?
The 2XU range is comfortable, light weight and provides great support. I love wearing a new pair of Compression or Triathlon Shorts when I have a race or starting a long training block.
What is your proudest sporting accomplishment?
Completing the Melbourne Marathon just 8 weeks after suffering a stroke and heart attack in October 2012.
When did you first set yourself a goal to achieve this, and why?
As soon as I could walk again I knew I had to complete the goal I had set myself before the stroke and heart attack. Melbourne was the next marathon on the calendar so I signed up with just 5 weeks preparation. I knew I had to set myself a goal to work towards. I wasn't going to let this set back stop me from being everything I could be.
What role did 2XU play in this journey?
I wore 2XU Compression Shorts during the race. I knew they were the best and that's what I needed to back me up. It worked and I finished!
What is your advice to others considering a challenge like this?
Set yourself mini goals - I always set myself daily mini goals to get myself back on track. For learning to walk again, the sorts of things were to do the physio exercises for 10 mins, take a break then do another 10 mins. I did this for up to 8 hours a day. I set myself an end goal of saying that as soon as I could walk I would run a marathon – a 42.2km or 26 mile race. I announced my goal very publicly because it created accountability for me and kept me on track and I achieved that goal running the whole way.
What is yur favourite 2XU piece of apparel?
Right now, it’s my 2XU Tri Shorts. I use them for swimming, cycling and running. They are super comfortable and they improve my performance. You can’t put a price on that!
Why do you choose 2XU?
Very early on in my athletic career I knew 2XU was the best. It reduces my muscle fatigue and speeds up muscle recovery; two very important things for anyone training. As soon as the opportunity presented itself I knew I had to get on board.
What is next for you on the sporting horizon?
I recently completed the 2013 IRONMAN World Championships in Kona, Hawaii – it was physically the toughest race I will ever do. I’m also doing IRONMAN WA in December 2013, IRONMAN Australia in May 2014 and IRONMAN Cairns in June 2014. After completing IRONMAN Cairns, it will mark two years to the day that I was able to walk again. After everything my family and I have been through, it's a challenge I’m up for and want to achieve for us all.
