2XU Local Legend - City to Surf Speed Demon
When and why did you first encounter 2XU?
At The Age Run Melbourne Expo. I was there to run the 10km race - the weather was wet and colder than I had anticipated. I was looking for a pair of tights and came across the 2XU booth. I had read a little about compression, and after speaking to the 2XU rep, I was excited to give it a try.
What was your first purchase?
2XU Elite Compression Tights.
What was your feedback to the garment?
My muscles didn’t seem to fatigue as quickly, and more importantly, my recovery time after the race was faster! Now I own two sets of all my Elite Compression pieces (Tights, Shorts and Socks) so I can train or race in one set, then jump into a clean set to recover after a shower.
What is your proudest sporting accomplishment?
Crossing the line at the 2013 City2Surf in 73 minutes – placing me in the top 5% for my category, top 5% for all females and top 16% of all participants.
In 2012 my goal for City2Surf was to only be able to run the entire way and to just finish the race. My time was 1 hour 51 minutes.
When did you first set yourself a goal to achieve this, and why?
When my husband and I moved to Australia, he gave up his job and left his friends and family to support me. He has always been a runner, and wanted it to be something we did together – but I didn’t run. When we came to Australia, I committed to start running because I knew it really mattered to him.
In January 2012 I took my first steps and could barely run 500m. City2Surf was the "iconic" Sydney race to be part of – so I set my goal to run it. That August I completed it in 1 hour 51 mins at an average pace of 7:54. This year, I completed the 2013 City2Surf in 73 mins at an average pace of 5:13!
What role did 2XU play in this journey?
This year, my lead to City2Surf involved three 10km races between July 14th and Aug 11th. My 2XU gear allowed me to train consistently, improve the quality and speed of my recovery and reduce my risk of injury. This all lead to me achieving a PB at each consecutive race!
What is your advice to others considering a challenge like this?
Even when you think you can’t go any further – just push though a little more. In the "game of wills", your brain can out-muscle both your calves and quads!
Stick at it. My journey started with me barely being able to run 500m—but I ran that short distance over and over again until I could push through to 1km, then I ran that over and over again until I could make 3km, then 5km. Now I’m running between 7-12km, four to five times a week. It has been 20 months now and I can still remember thinking to myself "I’ll never be able to do this". Now I know the answer is YES!
What is yur favourite 2XU piece of apparel?
It’s tough to choose, but I would nominate my 2XU Elite Compression Tights.They’re my "go-to" before, during and after a run.
Why do you choose 2XU?
It’s a great Australian company. I tried other brands, but the quality, detail and company commitment just wasn’t there.
What is next for you on the sporting horizon?
A Half Marathon - I’ll be running my first on Sept 22nd – the Blackmores Half Marathon in Sydney, then the Philadelphia, USA Half Marathon on Nov 17th. My goal is 1:55.
