Jamie's Journal - 10 Days to Kona: Day 5

2XU's Co-Founder/Director and Head of Product Development Jamie Hunt, is lining up for his first IRONMAN (IM) World Championships (Kona, Hawaii) on October 13.  In the M40-44 category; Jamie made his full IM debut in Melbourne earlier this year - not only finishing in a cracking time of 8:58:06, but winning his Age Group.  While Hunt originally left the circuit to establish 2XU; he's now back and determined to show what his highly acclaimed technical 2XU Compression + Triathlon garments can do.  Starting Wednesday October 3 to race-day eve, Jamie will be checking in with a daily journal entry.

Here's DAY 5:

Today marked the one week to go point, which like most athletes, represents the last solid workout. Cam decided to have a day off, so I was off on the Queen K on my own. Actually, I wouldn't say I was on my own, it was the Kona version of Beach Rd, Melbourne on a fine weekend morning! Everyone on their tricked up Tri bikes.  I recently invested in the new Specialized Shiv with Di2 shifting - the same bike as Crowie rides!  While I'm very aware it's the legs that make Crowie go fast, the bike certainly helps a little as well.

I felt terrible when I went to bed last night - actually exhausted.  There was no particular reason to explain it, and this morning when I awoke, still wasn't feeling great.  So I headed out to play the session according to how I felt.  Within 10 minutes I felt ok, and blasted out 100km at around 34km average.  Then got off and ran 5km at 4min/km pace - way too fast, but when I wasn't concentrating my speed went up.  My goal race pace is 4.30min/km which would have felt pedestrian today, but I know next week it will be a different story!  So overall I clocked a good workout; the weather here is very mild (no sun in kona for days), so it wasn't too tiring.  I'm praying it will stay the same through to race day!

We've just headed down to the Hilton at Waikoloa for the weekend, as we have sun this side of the island and the girls want to go home looking a little bronzed!  It's an afternoon nap for me, before watching a little college football - when in Rome, right?

Aloha,

Jamie
