Jamie's Journal: 10 Days to Kona - DAY 4
2XU's Co-Founder/Director and Head of Product Development Jamie Hunt, is lining up for his first IRONMAN (IM) World Championships (Kona, Hawaii) on October 13. In the M40-44 category; Jamie made his full IM debut in Melbourne earlier this year - not only finishing in a cracking time of 8:58:06, but winning his Age Group. While Hunt originally left the circuit to establish 2XU; he's now back and determined to show what his highly acclaimed technical 2XU Compression + Triathlon garments can do. Starting Wednesday October 3 to race-day eve, Jamie will be checking in with a daily journal entry.
Here's DAY 4:
Sitting out on my deck watching the surfers catch waves into shore, I'm feeling very content. It has been two years of hard work, but this is the stuff that makes it worth it. It's great to feel fit again, and best of all, it's not about having to race to feed the family, like it once was.
Establishing 2XU was a similar story; a lot of hard work, but like racing, what you put in is what comes out . Sharing a vision with my two business partners - to build an authentic high performance sporting brand, to me had been like a race. Definitely more an Ironman than a short course affair, growing 2XU has always been about doing that little bit extra, stopping at nothing to find the extra 1-2% wins. Like having great training partners, the 2XU 'race plan' has been about having staff which share the same vision, and being there to support and assist during the hard times. At 2XU we have that, and it's exciting to be a part of this ever growing business.
Training today is legs-off, so swam the course this morning; easy on way out, with some intervals coming back. It was solid - finishing under an hour - so I'm looking on track for the sub 55 swim I want on race day.
Tomorrow's session is a 100km ride followed by 20 to 30min off the bike. It's definitely difficult not to train hard while you're here. It takes a lot of self control to keep training to a minimum. Whatever I do now isn't going to help - it's simply about maintaining strength and speed in a controlled manner.
Off to find a quiet corner to have a few zzz's!
Aloha,
Jamie
