Jamie's Journal - 10 Days to Kona: DAY 3

2XU's Co-Founder/Director and Head of Product Development Jamie Hunt, is lining up for his first IRONMAN (IM) World Championships (Kona, Hawaii) on October 13.  In the M40-44 category; Jamie made his full IM debut in Melbourne earlier this year - not only finishing in a cracking time of 8:58:06, but winning his Age Group.  While Hunt originally left the circuit to establish 2XU; he's now back and determined to show what his highly acclaimed technical 2XU Compression + Triathlon garments can do.  Starting Wednesday October 3 to race-day eve, Jamie will be checking in with a daily journal entry.

Here's DAY 3:

Guess what? It's sunny and hot in Kona again today. Every day it's exactly the same - a low of 23 and high of 29 with plenty of humidity thrown in...just make it a little harder for us athletes.

It's mid morning as I write this and training is already done for the day. I joined Cam Brown and Josh Rix for a 1.20 run out at the Energy Lab (the far point of the Hawaii Ironman World Champs run course).  The name says it all - it's the place on the run where the course sucks all your energy.  It's hot and has a 1km climb out of it back to the Queen K highway before the final 10km home. It's often where the race is won or, most often, lost.

We ran out there at 8am.  Even if the day wasn't at its hottest, the pace was!  We averaged 4.25km/min, with the last 5km at its fastest.  As always, Cam says I was pushing the pace...but as this is MY blog, I can say he was the one doing the pushing!  I did feel strong on this run, which is a good sign as I've been feeling tired the last five days.

The remainder of today will involve a massage and taking my bike to the local bike shop Bikeworkz for a tune up.  Tomorrow we're swimming the course, and Saturday will be a solid bike-run workout.  Then I'll start heading into my serious taper!

Stay tuned, as tomorrow I'll have a short interview with four-time World Championship podium placer Cameron Brown as he prepares for his very first Hawaii Ironman in his 40's!

 Aloha,

Jamie
