Profession: Professional Triathlete |
QuestionnaireWhat does your standard training week involve? At least 20hrs of training. I’m trying to improve my swimming so I do a lot of training with the ‘young guns’ in our swim club. Favourite training venue/environment: It’s still Karlsruhe. Of course the weather is sometimes very bad, but all my friends are here and I need this balance for my training. For training camp it’s the complete opposite. I just want to focus on my training so Fuerteventura is perfect. Favourite 2XU garment, when you use it and why: It’s the X:1 Wetsuit. As I mentioned, I’m not born in the water, so I’m looking for anything to give me an advantage over the other guys. I’m looking forward to the X:2! Favourite training accessory (ie. heart rate monitor, power meter, pool buoy): iPod. Toughest experience in your career & what you learned from it: Crashing in a very important race. What I learned from it? You can´t cheat physics. What’s the most common training mistake you see on the circuit? Any suggestions on how to avoid it? Too much training & not having enough fun whilst you’re doing it. What motivates you to train and race harder? There’s nothing worse than the feeling of not giving everything during the race after crossing the finish line. I don’t have a problem getting a second place, but I have a problem not trying to win. You can’t train this, it’s either in it, or not. Describe your diet/meal plan in the week leading to a big race: I do a soft sort of saltin diet, so I reduce the carbs a little with 7 days to go during the last harder training stuff. Then the last couple of days mostly rest and a lot of good food. How do you balance out your training/racing regime with life outside sport? It’s not that difficult because most of my friends are also on the circuit. But they’re very relaxed and don’t talk about sport all the time. My girlfriend is one of the top five street runners in Germany, so I can spend quite a lot of time with her. What type of nutritional supplement do you find most helpful (either for training or competition)? I think Biestmilch helps me prevent a lot of flu and bugs During races I only take Powerbar products. If the hotel food is bad in training camp, the Powerbar stuff tastes good enough to replace a meal. Best and worst thing about being a professional athlete: The best is that you can travel around the world and train a lot, but the bad thing is you HAVE TO travel around the world and train a lot. In five years time, I’ll be: Super rich, Ironman World Champion, Dr. In Physics, World Record Holder over the iron distance! |
